Brisbane and Sydney International Container Terminals: A Landmark, Award Winning Project.

The project involves the construction of new state-of-the-art container terminals at the Port of Brisbane and Port Botany Sydney. When fully operational they will have a total capacity of more than 1.5 million TEU per annum via seven shipping berths on a 600 mtr and 1,300 mtr quay line respectively.

In partnership with Fujitsu Australia (prime contractor), DESA Australia was contracted by Hutchison Ports Australia to build the communications infrastructure across the combined 70 hectare sites which connects and operates the entire site plant including quay cranes, automatic stacking cranes, truck portals, vehicle management, vision recognition systems for container management, and various other systems.

Brisbane and Sydney International Container DESA installed indoor and outdoor optical fibre, harsh environment outdoor cabinets (designed to operate outdoors in full sun at the hottest latitudes in Australia, with extensive solar and thermal testing performed in-house by DESA), structured copper cabling and wireless access points throughout the site for full 8-2.11n wi-fi coverage in the most challenging maritime industrial conditions.

DESA also provided turnkey site security and CCTV surveillance systems for both sites, which by their very nature have high security requirements with regulated maritime security zones.

DESA designed, integrated and installed critical elements of the site’s electrical and control systems.  These included high voltage (11kV) and low voltage power control systems (PLC and SCADA systems), variable message signage for truck/vehicle management, control cabling for cranes and PLCs and control cabling for gate automation systems.

The project commenced mid 2012 in Brisbane and was completed in Sydney June 2014. Phase 2 of the project for Sydney is due for completion early in 2015 with Brisbane Phase 2 earmarked for mid 2015 completion.

This was a large, high profile project delivered through great team work across the states. The SICT project represents a landmark for DESA in terms of the implementation of a national strategy. The DESA team displayed a high level of innovation and initiative in taking on and successfully delivering a project that represented new areas of capability for DESA.

This project was also awarded the national BICSI South Pacific 2014 Professional ICT Infrastructure Installation Award, a major achievement for the DESA New South Wales and Queensland teams and an important milestone in our national strategy of building the best communication infrastructure company in Australia.
